Social networking site Facebook has added a civil union option for its users’ when describing their relationship status.
The change was added yesterday for users in the US, Canada, France, the UK and Australia. Previously, gay couples could only describe themselves as married, even though many countries are yet to legalise same-sex marriages.
The move has been hailed as a considerable step forward for equality.
"By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the U.S. and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media," Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation president Jarrett Barrios told CNN in a statement.
GLAAD and several other gay-rights groups met with the company to effectuate for the change.
