Two US lesbians have won the right to attend a high school celebration together – after human rights groups sued education officials.
Sarah Lindstrom and Desiree Shelton, both 18, entered the Snow Days Pep Fest at Champlin Park High School in Minnesota to the cheers of hundreds of classmates, with dozens giving them a standing ovation.
Traditionally, only male/female couples were allowed to take part in the US celebration. But, in federally mediated talks last weekend, school officials relented.
Both school governors and the National Center for Lesbian Rights agreed that members of the royalty court would be escorted by anyone meaningful to them, regardless of gender or age.
the move has been hailed a turning point for America's much-maligned school system. In recent years, it suffered particular embarrassment when Constance mcMillen filed a similar suit – only to be sent to a fake prom as a diversion.
Lindstrom and Shelton's school has previously courted criticism over its "neutrality" approach to discussing homosexuality in the classroom.
Likewise, in 2009, former gay student Justin Aaberg killed himself after being harrassed.
