Iranian queer-feminist fashion photographer Tara Inanloo, 21, has won her plight to stay in the UK, it has been revealed.
Her life has been in grave danger and she believed she would be executed if she goes back to Iran. But it has been announced, via Inanloo’s Facebook support page, that the UK Border Agency have made the decision immediately, granting her political refugee status in UK.
The feminist activist and photographer arrived in Britain in 2008 to study photography at Nottingham Trent University. Dubbed by The Guardian as the Iranian Cindy Sherman, Inanloo took to photographing herself in different disguises – as an intellect, as a whore, nude and in burlesque dress.
Her self portraits are a set of projects titled Illegal Images. Through these images, “she represents the hidden aspect of a life of an Iranian woman that she discovers in herself,” reads the blurb on her website, tarainanloo.com.
It continues: “She invites the spectator to gaze at her image, to the prohibited body of an Iranian woman. These images will challenge the viewer since she is depicting Iranian women in an entirely different way comparing to what the world has seen through photographs of Iranian photographers till today.”
On speaking to The Guardian journalist, Tanya Gold, Inanloo said: "I grew up drowning in lies and dishonesty. It is not easy to grow up pretending to be a non-existent creature. You always have to lie. But I have always tried to be an outlaw and cross the boundaries."
