A gay bar in Manchester's famous Canal Street has become the subject of an online storm after posting a job ad – exclusively for heterosexuals.
Owners of student club Downtown – who also own the gay village's AXM club – published the ad earlier this week.
The ad, which featured on their Facebook page, read: 'JOBS: Looking for flyerers/pr people for Downtown. Ideally 2 blokes/1 girl. Straight, Good looking, Outgoing etc. 20 hours per week, £6 an hour. Hours may vary. Interested?'
It has since been taken down, following a number of complaints.
In the last few minutes an edited version of the ad has appeared, reading: "JOBS: Looking for flyerers/pr people for Downtown. 3 people required. Male and/or Female. Good looking, Outgoing etc. Applications open to everyone! Regardless of orientation, sexuality, race etc. To compliment the diverse team that we're proud to have across the whole of the AXM group. 20 hours per week, £6 an hour.... Hours may vary. Interested? Email chris@axmgroup.co.uk today!"
Currently, the Equality Act prohibits sexual orientation discrimination – however, workplaces can actively shape the demographics of their staff if it's ‘genuine, determining and proportionate’.
A PinkPaper.com reader who alerted us to the story, said: "It seems interesting that a sister company to one of Canal Street's most succesful bars would openly discriminate against gay people."
However, Haydn Pope of AXM defended the advert – saying that it was more akin to positive discrimination because the majority of their employees are gay.
