Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George Bush, has expressed her support for same sex marriage – despite her father’s opposition to it.
The 29 year-old publicised her view, along with her mother, in a video for The Human Rights Campaign.
Advocates from The Human Rights Campaign say they approached Bush to appear in the video after she attended a fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights – a group created to challenge California’s Proposition 8.
Paul Guequierre, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, said the video was produced to help gain support for same-sex marriage rights in New York, where Bush lives.
In the video, Barbara says: “I’m a New Yorker for marriage equality. New York is about fairness and equality and everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”
A bill legalising gay marriage managed to pass the New York state Assembly in 2009 but was defeated in the state Senate later that year.
