A sexually suggestive new advert for the Renault Twingo has been banned following claims by some Italian broadcasters that the 30-second ad is too raunchy.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s media group, Mediaset, is among the channels to have dropped the car ad.
The clip shows two women flirtatiously eying one another up, before hastily moving to the bedroom where one of the women is blindfolded while the other steals her top and goes out for a ride in her new Renault.
The advert, which first shows the car after 20-seconds, ends with the tagline Renault Twingo: la competizione e femmina – which directly translates as ‘the competition is female’.
The commercial, which is still expected to be aired across Europe, has angered gay groups in Italy who have questioned Renault’s portrayal of lesbians.
However, Renault and producers Publicis, have defended the contended clip.
A spokesman for Renualt said: “We think it’s a great advert, is very open minded and continues the theme of previous adverts which always plays on irony.”
Sky Italia are currently the only channel airing the commercial.
