Continue »Lady Gaga ends Target contract over anti-gay funding claims
Lady Gaga has ended her exclusive relationship with US retail chain Target, after it was alleged they refused to stop funding anti-gay political campaigns.
In a deal arranged in February, a special edition of Lady Gaga’s upcoming album Born This Way was to be sold exclusively at Target stores.
The company was criticised last year when it emerged that they had donated money to MN Forward, a public action committee who support a ban on same-sex marriage.
At the time of the deal, Gaga – real name Stefani Germanotta – said that her relationship with the company was dependent on them “affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups,” and “making up for their past mistakes.”
But according to reports, Target’s donations to homophobic causes have not stopped, and earlier this week they also came under fire for trying to prevent campaigners for marriage equality canvassing outside their stores.
A spokesperson for Gaga refused to comment on the claims, instead stating: “Lady Gaga and Target came to a mutual decision to end their overall exclusive partnership a few weeks ago.”
The title track from the album is currently topping the US Billboard Hot 100, and is at number four in the UK charts.
Gaga tweeted: “The point, with ‘Born This Way,’ is to fight for something that not everyone believes in. To overcome adversity with a message.”
