Continue »Straight couple denied civil partnership in latest equality bid
A straight couple who were refused a civil partnership today say they will continue their legal challenge. Stephanie Munro and Andrew O’Neill, from Camden, north London, are among eight couples who are fighting to overturn the twin ban on gay civil marriages and heterosexual civil partnerships.
The couple managed to book their ceremony after pretending they were two females.
Speaking exclusively to DIVA at the register office in Camden Town Hall, Munro, 27, said: “We don’t really identify with the idea of marriage and the language of it… ‘husband and wife’. It doesn’t really suit us because we’re partners. We’d like a legal status that’s based around a partnership rather than a marriage of husband and wife.
“[Marriage] has got a lot of baggage, that sort of patriarchal baggage and homophobic baggage. It's something that we can’t really relate to, so we’d like something new and more equal.”
O’Neill, 31, added that he and his partner are not trying to “muscle in” on gay civil partnerships. “The idea of this is for equality,” said O’Neill.
Both say they do not want civil partnerships to be available to straight couples if marriage is not an option for gay couples.
Their bid is part of the new Equal Love campaign organised by the gay rights group Outrage and coordinated by the human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, with the support of the Peter Tatchell Human Rights Fund.
Asked if civil partnerships would inevitably become marriage-lite if the ban on straight people were to be lifted, Tatchell said: “For a lot of gay people they see civil partnerships as marriage-lite. A second-class, inferior system of relationship recognition. That’s why they want full same-sex civil marriage.
“Everyone in the world knows what a marriage is. Very few people outside Britain know what a civil partnership is. It’s meaningless. No teenager grows up dreaming of a civil partnership. They dream of falling in love and getting married.”
Tatchell added that another heterosexual couple will file an application for a civil partnership in Aldershot next week.
On 21 December all eight couples will participate in a press conference at King’s College London to discuss the legal strategy to overturn the twin ban.
