The director of The Kids Are Alright, the comedy drama about a family headed by a lesbian couple, has spoken out about the sex scenes in the film.
At an awards luncheon Lisa Cholodenko was asked to compare the love scenes in her film, which stars Julianne Moore and Annette Bening, with those in the soon to be released Natalie Portman thriller Black Swan.
After the loves scenes in the latter movie were explained to her, the director perhaps alluded to the greater amount of press coverage Black Swan has received, as she answered: "It sounds like the kind of subplot that could have not been in the movie. Ours was done with humor. It wasn\'t languid sexuality. And in the tradition of lovemaking scenes, it\'s harder to sell ours -- the more awkward, interrupted sex scenes."
Speaking about the criticism her movie - which is highly touted as a future Oscar-winner - has received from some for having one of its leads cheat on her partner with a man, Cholodenko said: "They say, \'Why did she have to stray with a man?\' And that just feels very narrow to me. Sexuality is fluid. Not everyone lives on the lesbian reservation."
