The blinding pain slams me around, flips me over. I land hard on my back. Mechanically, like a clockwork doll, I grab my arm. It's bleeding. Another explosion, this one further away, and another hail of bullets. I skitter backwards. I look and see my battalion racing forwards, fanning out through...

She's 22 and I'm 23, by the way. When Tim arrived, he looked exactly like I remembered him. Leather jacket,...

Wales’s oldest gay bar – Cardiff’s Kings Cross – is to close this summer, despite a huge campaign to keep it open. Owners Mitchells & Butlers say they plan to call time on the infamous city centre venue because they can make more money from it being a restaurant than a gay bar.
The announcement made earlier this week comes just days before the bar holds a special party to celebrate it being awarded the best gay bar in Wales.
The shock decision comes after a massive campaign to save the Kings was launched by customers of the bar, which has been trading as a gay venue for 35 years. Cardiff Council leader, Councillor Rodney Berman, was one of many people, including MPs, councillors and customers who wrote to M&B to express concern that the venue is being considered for redevelopment as a boutique restaurant and bar.
In a letter to Adam Fowle, Chief Executive of Mitchells & Butler Plc, Councillor Berman urged the company to reconsider any potential plans to re-brand the Kings Cross on the corner of Mill Lane and Caroline Street.
The decision to review the future of the Kings Cross has been met with huge disappointment by members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in Cardiff who have launched a Facebook campaign to save the historic venue.
To date almost thousands of people have signed up and the campaign is also being supported by Cardiff Central AM Jenny Randerson.
Councillor Berman said: "I have written to Mitchells & Butler Plc to outline the strength of feeling that there is about this review of the Kings Cross.
"Cardiff has built an enviable reputation for inclusion and diversity and it would be particularly disappointing, at a time when the authority has expended considerable effort and investment in regenerating the capital’s city centre, that a message was put out, even inadvertently, that a gay venue is no longer felt to be appropriate or welcome in Wales’ premiere retail destination."
The Kings Cross first opened in 1873 and has been a leading gay venue in Cardiff for 40 years.
In his letter Councillor Berman urges the company to make "every effort to reassure the Kings Cross clientele that this long established and much valued establishment will continue to operate as a venue aimed at the LGBT community."
He said: " I hope that by writing to Mitchells & Butlers they understand the importance of this venue to the city and the LGBT community. This is a pub with a unique identity and the sheer numbers of people who have already signed up to the campaign is a clear indication of how valuable the Kings Cross is to Cardiff as a gay venue."
However M&B have said the Kings is losing money and despite attempts to sell the bar nobody has come forward with a proposal and they plan to go ahead with their plan to convert it to a restaurant.
The manager of the Kings, who was only informed of the decision today was clearly shocked by the unexpected decision but could not comment about the bar’s future.
Customers at the bar however are determined to make their voices felt. Meanwhile a meeting will be held in the Kings this week to discuss the campaign and further details can be found on the save The Kings Cross Facebook site.
